Hey, Deezy, it’s been a while, tell me how have you been?
Heard you live in the city and got a job right out of town
It’s like you were cut from the pages of my favorite fairy tale
And every time it rains, oh God, I still see your face
I hope it’s smoothed over, things were tough for a while
Hope you’re burning through canvases and breaking a leg on that stage
Earlier this evening I found myself a rusted park bench
It made me think of you that night on the square
Have you shot any pool? Have you sung karaoke?
Have you dressed up as a dead bride with white on your face?
We miss you like hot tea misses crumbly scones
And although sometimes alone, I hope you never feel scared
Things are fair to middling here, not much has changed
Still working the same job, and our fingers to the bone
Sometimes we still see you sitting there at our table
Sometimes we hear your voice when singing with the radio
Do you ever just stand there and watch the fog cross the bay?
Finding new museums or a crazy good cup of joe?
And little Deezy, take some time to appreciate it all
You made your way all around this crazy old place
Hey, Deezy, don’t you ever feel let down
Don’t give up, you know, one day you’ll rule the world
Thought I’d drop you a note just to let you know
That though on separate coasts, you’re never alone
Oh and one more thing Deezy, please stay strong
Give them hell, kid, and show them all what you got
I’m so proud we had that time together
And if I had a sister, I swear I’d wish it was you
If I had a sister I’d sure wish it was you

I lit out from Pelahatchie met a girl from Tallahassee
She was sweet and kind of sassy
Then she turned her head and said “well, are you gonna ask me?”
Why don’t we roll on down the road?
Let’s head some places we don’t know
We’ll sing loud with the radio
“Our shadows taller than our souls”
We’ll wind our way up the Natchez Trace
Let’s feel alive but with different lives than we had a couple weeks ago
Let’s ignore all the signs, get nowhere on time, and sleep out in the pines

Somewhere south of Memphis, I heard the angels sing
And west of Birmingham, I dreamed in the driving rain
If the Sun don’t shine, you better make it yourself
And radiate with all that’s left
Maybe there’s still time to board that train
Somewhere north of Jackson, and east of Baton Rouge
Tuckered out, I saw the light and my soul was moved
From churches, I heard the sound
Up and down streets and around the town
A tide across rock, gospel, and the blues
Somewhere between the river and the Tenn-Tom Waterway
Where 45 runs across 78
With worn out shoes, I hitch a ride
From the overlook, saw the sunrise
And found myself a home out on the Trace
And I won’t ever leave here again
Come what may
And I found a tie to sacred kin
Won’t come all frayed
And I got cozy in my skin
Think I’m going to stay
And I won’t ever live here again
Going to dig my grave on the Natchez Trace

A demon in my father’s eyes, the reason that my mother cries
I’ve got so far to go for good
A monster in a soft disguise, it fosters all this foolish pride
A cross to bear left where I stood
Break my spirit to see how it feels
Too calloused to fear it or how it heals
Another story forms the ideal
Just something to bury out in the field
Florescent with a dim surprise, guessing it’s all in their eyes
Sometimes I want out for good
Dramatic as the evening sky, emphatic with the whitest lie
The cross to bear now trickles blood
She tried to shape me, make me better
I was a blanket getting wetter
Every word she said imploring, but new paths weren’t worth exploring
Lost my chance to try to meet her in the middle
Slipped into the ether
Slipping ever slowly past me snapping back like broke elastic
In the comfort of deranged become part of the sick change
In dying from this trying
In this furlough, rearrange
I tried my best to hurt you, never felt the threat of virtue
In a fountain near the ocean, saw a face there fully frozen
Daring me to dive back in to a sinful world of skin to swim
Wake up one day battered, know my actions never mattered
Flight stalling, ego falling, crashing back with clockwork clatter
Take this shovel and dig harder
Dig a hole and I’ll go farther
I won’t accept it or reject it, I’m just tinder for the starter
I’ll be here on the ground just wishing for the water
Cast a dragnet on the stagnant shore
Find and fix this putrid core
Discover a value and grasp to heal
Gather the stallions, ride through the field
I’m just tinder for the starter, I’ll be here on the ground wishing for the water
I’m just tender from the slaughter, wishing for some water

Long Time Coming

I found some old clippings from stag magazines
For a minute reliving all these crazy teenage dreams
Of parties and liquor, dumping this red paint all over the town
Moving a little quicker, and no girls ever turning me down
But as we slowly age, our dreams slip away
We all got to grow up some time
Hold tight to this new one, hoping it’s never done
Don’t wait for fate, we’ll build our own signs
Found an old year book from back in my teens
And nailing down the look to be homecoming queen
I’d go to med school, but a big house with a white picket fence
A garden by the pool, and a list of the highest hitting friends
Don’t hesitate we’ll build our own signs
God knows I’m trying, and I’m not the same as I was before
So weak with goodbyes, don’t want to see a note left by the door
God knows I’m feeling it, but still scared as shit
Of losing all that I adore
And I won’t ever quit, I’ll keep chasing it
We’ll keep dreaming together some more
Not on MTV, there’s not charities named for me
We’re on the front porch swing, sharing a pitcher of sweet iced tea
And all these simple things, and little dreams, are right where we’re wanting to be

The time has come for bed, come now, you need your rest
The Moon’s rising high, so soon say good night with this melody tucked in your head
A long, long time ago in a valley so far away
Nestled at the end of the road, a palace where the mighty played
With a tower that soared, and behind a locked door
A prince made of tin was kept
And way across town, a stable girl we found
With her eyes on a knightship instead
She worked all day to build her might
She kept her dreams in her sight
And once fed a bird that shared a word about a boy trapped in a room high
In the wheeze of the wind and the breeze, there’s a friend that will help you and be your guide
She worked her way through the woods, met friendly beasts along the way
She could see that they were good, they showed her safely to the place
A guarded bridge across the moat, so she’d quietly float
And work her way in from there
Not making a sound, she tiptoed around and climbed up the tower stairs
To the door of the prince, they spoke and made friends
Until a guard took her away
And threw her prone in front of the throne
Where the king demanded “Explain!”
She spoke all about the bird, she didn’t leave out a word
She tried not to cry as the king reached for his thigh and pulled out a guilded sword
He’s scared of his kin with the metallic skin and the power that could possibly grow
And she quietly rose, but before she could go, she turned and embraced the king
She said in a sweet sound “It’s what’s inside that counts” and that the boy and her had shared dreams
The king was touched and he pulled her up, but before he gave her the key
“There’s something I must do, it’s needed of you, please get on one knee”
And now she’s a knight, the tin prince by her side
But she still visits the barn, forever they’ll be loving and free
And I hope that this keeps you warm
I hope you tightly sleep
With sweet dreams and numbered sheep
And the morning will come without warning
The Sun will work its way onto your sheets

Walk with neighbors on the shoreline
With their help, like never before shine
Like our ancestors before us
We join the insects’ nightly chorus
With the river ever flowing
Onward, upward is where we’re going
God’s favor, all receiving
Whichever one you believe in
Thankful, let our voices rise
Stewards of land, stream, and skies
Golvania, we forever trust
Golvania, take care of us
Hand in hand, we hold our friends
Bless our home this sacred land

When the bell begins to ringing, you best be believing
I’m gonna cut out through the fields
Past my deddy’s crops and momma’s blacksmith shop
The ground won’t even touch my heels
Back with all my buddies: bats and bugs and bunnies
All asking “how do you do?”
Secret conversations, where others lack the patience
But I sure did miss you too
After all the speaking, we start the hide-n-seeking
No other kids around
It’s too easy I’m told, with my ringlets of gold
And my skin a creamy brown
My sundress is all grimy, not long before they find me
The ox just shakes his head
“Thank you for the playing, I’m worn out and must be laying”
And Ollie just makes a bed
The others come and join him, but because of the enjoyment
Energy fills me instead
By the woods I’m running, the coppice needs a-burning
The bushes all overgrown
I hear the distant thunder, so I decide to duck under
Because I’m too far from home
The trees were like shingles, I didn’t feel a sprinkle
As I was making a brand new way
They gully washer kept on coming, but I just kept on humming
Running deeper in without delay
I think that I had better make myself a shelter
The storm’s gonna grow worse all day

In the fog of the forest, she came across a cave
She went in to get out of the rain
Above the wind’s howling, she thought she heard a growling
“I hope it doesn’t mind I came inside”
From the darkest corner she caught a pair of bright green eyes
And glowing teeth in less than a smile
As quickly as she thought it, she reached into her pocket
This wintergreen as a peace offering
It took the candy into its hand
He crushed it up and gulped it with a snarl
He showed his teeth again, but in a frankly friendly grin
And offered up his fur to dry her off
She inquired as to his name, he looked away in shame
And said, “I’ve been called ‘monster’ and ‘beast’
But every couple days, they send their knights and knaves
Trying to get a trophy for their feast
But, really, what I’m called is, I guess nothing at all
No one’s ever bothered to speak”
Over wintergreen, conversing in-between
They grew closer and dear
He shoved aside the mess, and Priscilla was impressed
And over fresh tea, their worries disappeared
He said his DNA impacts what others see and say
Their purpose is only kill or die
She sat quite confused by the tales of their abuse
Why not try to identify?
As the night drew on, they both let out a yawn
And slept cuddled side-by-side
In the morning when she wakes, he has a smile on his face
He’s prepared a most delicious meal
He says let’s walk about on an unexplored route
And they came to a pretty pond of teal
She said, “It seems silly, but, I mean really,
You deserve a name, so it shall be
Fitzbillly.”

Listen here, can you hear that song, it’s half agony and half hope?
A little bit of mourning, slathered in love
All that longing, emotions pull and shove
Looky there, over the trees, swooping down, carried by the breeze
A six feet long tail, golden-brown hair in a Mohawk
Green wings, a voice heavy in the air
The words tell a story of a king seeking glory
Tactics cruel and actions gory
A talent pool, alchemist and mage
Not quite fools, but not quite sage
Feathered friend, please come down, I must ask you about your sweet sound
Lights on the ground, he takes a bow
Looks rather confused, he cocks his brow
“I talk to lizards, fish, and squirrels. I’ve even talked to other boys and girls
But I’ve never experienced a sound like this, so beautiful, majestic, so novel yet time-tested
What matter of creature are you?”
“I’m kinda rare, a plume-tailed crested thrasher
But most of my friends simply call me Aescher.
I’ve never met a featherless who understands, but, oh well, regardless I think we could be friends
A humanette and a beast…”
“Hey! His name is Fitzbilly! And, what were you singing about a king whose heart is so chilly?”
“He has a son, he seems like a nice kid, but out of fear, the king keeps him hid
The alchemist and mage, when the prince was just a babe
Said some words, waved their hands, and watched the astrolabe
They studied as the prince grew platelets on his skin, organic and metallic
All the wars he could win.
But as the child aged, the king became afraid of the child’s new might
So he locked him away
So now Thomas, the Tin Prince, has been trapped ever since in a tower’s top room
A single window is his world
The king won’t let him out out of kingly doubt
I believe that is just absurd”
“The palace our destination, let’s make preparations to save the day
Aescher, lead the way!”

So, buddies, you know what to do! We got to save the Prince!
Thomas sits alone in his room in his reflective skin
We’ll make our plan, we’ll take our stand, we’ll leave there with a new friend
So, buddies, you know what to do! We got to save the Prince!
Fitz, flail your arms, hoop, holler, and make a scene
Aescher, check on Tom, silently flap your wings
The guard factions fall for the distraction, can’t keep track of our whole team
Aescher, move so quietly, Fitzbilly really make a scene
I’ll climb down the cliff, go the straight to the moat
Hide between the bundles sticks, let’s hope the float
Eyes on the ridge, they’ll raise the bridge, won’t be checking down below
I’ll climb down the cliff and go straight to the moat
Aescher you’re so nimble, you can surely dodge
Fitz, night indestructible, their missiles will bounce right off
They won’t see me comin’ through the dreary dungeon, I’ll move in there just like a thought
Fitzbilly, Priscilla, and Aescher, you know, our team is swell to be hodge-podge
Aescher, I think it’s time, you better take to the sky
Fitz, make your way up to that old tree line
Making tracks, got each other’s backs, guards all blinded by sunlight
Fitzbilly by the line of trees, and Aescher takes to the sky
1, 2, 3, go! They don’t stand a chance
I’ll sneak down, they won’t even catch a glance
Now dance, Fitzbilly, Dance!!!

She’s gliding up the stairs as quietly as a mouse
The kingsmen watch the commotion outside, they haven’t figured her out
The top floor, she sees the door and she gently raps
No voice inside, perhaps he’s hiding thinking this is a trap
Sitting Indian style outside the door, she softly spoke
Revealed the helpful plan commenced, a faint reply, “This must be a joke
I’ve been here at least twelve years, I’ve never even felt grass
To see the halls beyond these walls would be too much to ask”
She said, “I can’t move the door, I think it’s cursed, it won’t budge
I think your name is Thomas, is it true you’re a metal man?
I grew up just East of here, that makes me Golvanian
What have you learned, let’s take turns and hear about our lives
Without a doubt, we’ll get you out, towards freedom we will strive”
And so they whispered, smiled, and laughed and grew close
She tried to unhinge the door and take it from the post
It began to glow and burned her bow, so she slipped him some wintergreen
He tasted one with excited tongue, such marvel he’d never seen
And he said, ““I can’t move the door, I think it’s cursed, it won’t budge”
They spoke, and joked, and laughed, and cried
Built his confidence and pride
He felt a twinge within his chest
He began to believe in himself
They grabbed the door from each side and wiggled it with all their might
It came down with a thud just before the guards showed up
The guards said, “How could they move the door? It was darkly cursed, it shouldn’t have budged
To the king we must present! Quickly, now, while their spent!”

You sneak in here like a parasite, convinced I’m doing wrong
And that you know right
There’s a whole world out there, should they all think the same
For every scapegoat you see, there’s twelve others to blame
It’s down to you and me, and we both got our dreams to change the world to suit our means
Your fear, king, has you paralyzed
And though I think you’re wrong, there’s more than just one right
Open your mind to new friends. A bird a beast helped me in
For every step I’ve made, a million others deserve the praise
It’s down to you and me, and we both got our dreams to change the world and strive for peace
I watched my father work the land, bringing food to helpful hands
We’d all play in the dirt having fun with nothing much
My mother, with anvil and pliers, turned metal into supplies
Raw materials just need a loving touch
Down to a girl and king, down to one last thing
He unsheathes his sword, a tear on his cheek
Lands on her shoulders, the kind shouts his orders
“Arise, Knight Priscilla, our Ambassador for Peace!”

The minstrel played the carillon and the king called for a feast
Subjects gathered in the hall to hail a new found peace
At the head of the table by the meat so freshly caught
Priscilla took the hand of the Tin Prince and danced and laughed about it all
The alchemist, the mage, and sage blessed the meal after the great parade
Wound a crown of xenia to lay at her plate
The three took in the sheer size of the friendly Fitz
And into account the large amount of weight held by the prince
They ran calculations over the food and heard Aescher sing
And said, “Hey, let’s find a way to help them travelling”
The alchemist, the mage, and sage ate quickly and wandered away
To the stable to find something to take the weight
The three found nothing in the stall, so this called for a feat
They said, “of course, let’s make a horse out of living concrete”
In a circle, they held hands, said some words, and conjured fire
Then they searched for a perch so Aescher wouldn’t get too tired
The mage, the sage, and the alchemist knew that this could hold Fitz
And the new knight, a bird tired of flight, and Thomas the Prince
The king made a toast and then shortly decreed
“It won’t be long before the strong Priscilla and Thomas wedding
Where once we were planning on more war and perhaps a spy
She changed our mind, helped us to find our first ever true ally”
She stood and grasped Tomas’s hand saying, “maybe not to wed
These adventures don’t have to end in romance, let’s try friendship instead
My mother loves her metals, so the Prince will surely learn
And when we meet my family, we’ll be the happiest one”
The beast, the bird, and the little girl, and Prince all embraced
Walked the town, hugs all around, met up in the place
Where the alchemist, the mage, and sage handed over what they had made
With great thanks, hearing the town sing of the Peaceful Golvanian way

I went down in the valley to play
Studying that old Golvanian way
Under a new peaceful crown
Little girl, show us the way
Oh fathers, let’s go down in the valley to play
I went down in the water to play
Learning that good Golvanian way
Working hard to turn it around
Little girl, show us the way
Oh mothers, let’s go down in the water to play
I went down to the mountain to play
Over the hills and far away
Listening to the sweetest sounds
Little girl, show us the way
Oh brothers, let’s go down to the mountain to play
I went down in the fields to play
Hearing what the animals had to say
That star-made bear looking down
Little girl, show us the way
Oh sisters, let’s go down in the fields to play
We went out in the world to play
Preaching that good Golvanian way
Love and friendship abound
Little Girl has shown us the way
Everybody, let's go out in the world to play
